THINGS curated by Tamara Projects

We hoard and surround ourselves with things to remind us of our past and to establish who we are. It’s as if the objects have got a magical power to stop time, keeping our memories alive. But when we are no longer here, forget, or dispose of the object, the web of stories disappears. And the object moves on, via a charity shop or an auction house, gathering a new story for someone else…

Another reason for our obsession with things is the belief that they carry powers and meanings because of whom they belonged to, a collectable pen used by Churchill, for example, a notion that the auction houses have always encouraged and something that goes back to totemism and ancient beliefs.

THINGS is a digital public art project where artists and writers are allocated an object to have for few weeks and they imagine stories for them. These objects are then placed on eBay site for the duration of a standard auction – 10 days, including their new ‘story’, a made up biography.

During that time they are also displayed together in an exhibition at 310 New Cross Road from 12-21 October, as a collection for the first and last time.

After the auction, the objects are sent to their buyers with a print out of the story, unsold lots are relisted until sold. The proceeds from the auction go to the artist.

The Ghost Tide Exhibition 19th Oct-5th Nov 2018

September 12, 2018

The Ghost Tide curated by Monika Bobinska & Sarah Sparkes

PV 19th October 6-9pm

20th October to 5th November 2018 (Open Thur-Sun 12-5pm and by appointment)

Thames-Side Studios Gallery, Harrington Way, Warspite Rd, London SE18 5NR

The Ghost Tide - coinciding with the festivals of Hallowe'en, All Souls and the Day of the Dead - takes as its starting point the perspective that ghosts exist as an idea, or as part of belief system, across cultures, across national borders and throughout recorded history. Most languages contain words to describe the ghost, spirit or immaterial part of a deceased person. Often, these words - like the type of ghost they describe - have traversed borders been assimilated across cultures.

The exhibition, situated next to the Thames Barrier in south-east London, evokes ghosts as a migratory tide of ghosts washed up along the shore of the Thames, their historical baggage in tow. It also evokes the presence of artists in this part of London, as a migratory tide of creative flotsam and jetsam which ebbs and flows as the city gentrifies and develops.

Featured works include sculpture, installation, film, sound, performance and wall based works. The exhibition will include installations and outdoor interventions, as well as public events and Sarah Sparkes' GHost Research Library ghost library.
